This booklet provides illustrations of the many diverse activities that UNESCO undertakes to prevent the spread of the epidemic. This short publication bears a strong message--prevention education works. If it is done well, it is effective. If done immediately, it will have long-term impacts. If done massively, it can turn the tide. Education programmes must help young people to understand the nature of the epidemic, know the behaviours and situations to avoid, and establish relationships that are protective of themselves and others as well as supportive of those infected and affected by HIV and AIDS
